Buildplate Studio
Buildplate Studio is a collection of customizable product designers for makers and small 3D-printing businesses. Customers change text, dimensions, colors and artwork while a 3D preview updates, then export files that go straight to the slicer.

Overview
Buildplate Studio (formerly Print Studio) helps makers and small print businesses sell personalized products without rebuilding a model for every order. Each product, from name keychains and whistles to coin banks, organizers and signs, has its own designer with the controls that product needs.
It is built for print shops taking personalized orders, makers who would rather skip CAD for routine products, online sellers working through a list of names, and event or team orders.
The problem
Personalized prints are a large part of what small 3D-printing businesses sell, but every order is slightly different. A name changes, a color changes, a size changes. In a general CAD tool that means reopening the model, editing it by hand, checking it, and exporting again for each customer.
General tools are flexible, but that flexibility is the cost: the person filling orders has to know how the model was built to change it safely.
The approach
Instead of one general editor, Buildplate Studio ships many narrow ones. Each designer knows the product it makes: which dimensions can change, which parts carry which color, how text sits on a base, where a keyring hole goes. The customer adjusts only what makes sense for that product.
Geometry is generated in the browser, so there is nothing to install and the 3D preview reflects the exact solid that will be exported.
The solution
- 01 Purpose-built designers for keychains, name tags, toppers, whistles, signs, containers and more.
- 02 A live 3D preview that updates as text, dimensions, colors and artwork change.
- 03 STL export, multicolor 3MF export and separated parts for the slicer.
- 04 Mass Produce: batch a whole plate of names and export it as a ZIP or a single 3MF on supported designers.
- 05 Templates are saved designs a user creates; presets are ready-to-try configurations that ship with a designer.
- 06 Community templates that can be published to a gallery or shared privately by link.
Technical architecture
The app is a SvelteKit and Svelte 5 application deployed on Cloudflare Workers. Three.js renders the preview. Solid modelling uses Manifold for watertight boolean operations, with three-bvh-csg and Clipper for mesh and 2D outline work, and Konva for the 2D canvas editor.
Accounts, saved designs and palettes are stored in Supabase. Exported 3MF files carry per-part colors and build plates so they open ready to slice in tools such as Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer.
Challenges
Text is the hardest input. Any font, any length and any language has to become a printable, watertight solid that still looks right at small sizes. Outlines, borders and inlays all depend on robust 2D offsetting and 3D booleans that never leave holes in the mesh.
Keeping more than sixty designers consistent is the other half of the work. They share export, color and template behavior so that what a customer learns in one designer carries over to the next.
Outcomes
Buildplate Studio is live at buildplate.studio with more than sixty product designers. Signed-in visitors can try every designer with a few free exports, and paid plans unlock unlimited exports and commercial use. The public counter on the site showed more than 12,000 files exported as of November 2026.
